Clearfield Co., PA (WJAC) — State police say a Philipsburg woman is facing charges after a child, that was in her care, fell off of a moving car, struck his head and later had to be placed into a medically induced coma.
Troopers say the incident occurred in early October when 45-year-old Brandi Vaughn was driving around the Decatur Township area, with multiple children in her vehicle.
Investigators say the children reportedly got out of the vehicle to chase after a deer that was in the roadway.
According to the affidavit, police say when the children returned to the vehicle, one of them allegedly climbed onto the trunk of the car.
Investigators say Vaughn began to drive away, at which time the boy fell off the vehicle and struck his head on the roadway.
Police say Vaughn did not seek immediate medical treatment for the child as he was placed back into the vehicle and was driven to his home.
Authorities say the child's parents were later notified of the incident, at which time the child was flown to UPMC Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh where he was placed into a medically induced coma.
Investigators say the child was treated for serious injuries to his face and head.
Authorities did not specify whether or not the child was still hospitalized.
According to online court records, Vaughn faces charges of aggravated assault with extreme indifference, simple assault and reckless endangerment.
She is out on unsecured $10,000 bail and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 7th, court dockets show.
