On Friday night, 11 empty Norfolk Southern rail cars derailed near the Horseshoe Curve in Altoona.
On Saturday morning, cleanup began, and so did the viewing party.
“Well, the reason we came out, I’m a big fanatic of trains. I always have been since I was young, and I heard there was a train derailment here, and he doesn’t happen very often, at least ... especially in the Horseshoe Curve, so that's one of the main reasons we came," said Johnstown resident Mason Scherer.
Local train enthusiasts climbed to the top of the national landmark to watch as crews removed the derailed cars from the tracks.
"I like seeing all the workers with the cars up and try and see if they can get put them back on the rails. You just don't see train derailments here that often," said Altoona resident Jordan Wolf.
Some tourists were unaware of the derailment and arrived at the iconic railroad to a bit of a surprise.
"Well, it was originally because I was meeting up with my friends, because we met here last year. And we come here, and then last night,we figure out that this happened, and now the trip is kind of ruined," said New Jersey resident Nick Sabella.
As visitors stood watching, they were shocked that such a thing could happen here.
“I think it's kind of crazy that a train derailed here, especially that is a world-famous landmark. It's crazy," explained Sabella.
